Dr. Jim Stahl served with distinction for 21 years as director of the Joseph Zeppa Recreation Center at East Texas State University. He came from Ohio in 1976 for the express purpose of serving as the first director of the new facility. Under his leadership, the facility that included a weight room, saunas, indoor swimming pool, handball/racquetball and a bowling alley became one of the most popular locations on campus. When a tornado damaged the Zeppa Center, Dr. Stahl was selected to direct the Memorial Student Center a position he held for two years.

Dr. Stahl developed a wellness program that helped students, faculty, staff and the community understand the necessity of a proper diet and aerobic exercise to improve heart health. He has run in the Boston Marathon and received national recognition as a top senior racquetball player by the U.S.A. Racquetball Association.

Dr. Stahl had been active with the Lions Club, received a Distinguished Service Award from the American Heart Association, and been named Citizen of the Year by the Commerce Chamber of Commerce and Texas Recreational Professional of the Year by the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

A U.S. veteran, Dr. Stahl served in the Korean War. He has been described as a mentor, administrator, volunteer, athlete, coach, confidante and trusted friend. He established an endowment in his name, which provides scholarships to deserving students at A&M-Commerce.
