Cannabis in India: Marijuana Legalization ahead?

When it comes to the discussion over making marijuana legal in India, various Indian states and prominent figures have responded favorably and given their consent over the past couple of years. States have pushed the central government to legalize marijuana because it may be highly profitable for them to cultivate it commercially.

2018 saw Uttrakhand become the first state in the nation to legalize the production of hemp for commercial purposes. The Indian Industrial Hemp Association (IIHA) was even given permission by the state government to cultivate hemp on a 1,000-acre experimental project.

The year also saw the Madhya Pradesh administration comply with the verdict. According to P.C. Sharma, the law minister for Madhya Pradesh, the state administration has agreed to legalize cannabis production in the state for both industrial and medical use. Nevertheless, since that declaration, there has been no additional advancement on the matter.

Another encouraging study came out of Manipur last year; the state is said to have some of the highest-quality marijuana in the nation. In a news conference, Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, stated that the state’s administration was seriously considering legalizing medical marijuana in order to increase tax income. He even said that start-ups could participate in the legalization process if they had a strong potential to work in this sector.

The growing state support for the movement is only encouraging given that Indian legislators are increasingly accepting of cannabis’ therapeutic benefits. Let’s hope the debate picks up steam and becomes more prominent in 2023, as this could result in additional encouraging developments with regard to marijuana legalization in India.
