Despite the legalization of recreational marijuana in New York State in 2021, illegal weed shops have continued to proliferate across the city, largely due to lax enforcement and legal loopholes. However, recent changes in the law have empowered officials to take swift action against these unlicensed businesses, allowing them to padlock doors without the drawn-out legal battles that previously made enforcement difficult.
