Mass deportation operation in the U.S. could trigger a recession

In the heat of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, immigration has taken center stage as one of the most debated topics. On one side, Republican candidate Donald Trump has promised what he calls the “largest mass deportation program in U.S. history” if he wins the White House. On the other side, Democrat Kamala Harris, as part of the Biden administration, has been involved in efforts to restrict the number of asylum seekers entering the country.

As tensions rise, so does anti-immigrant sentiment in the U.S. For the first time since 2001, over half of Americans—55%—now say they want to see a decrease in immigration. Many believe that undocumented immigrants are a burden on government resources, contributing little to the economy. But a recent study from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy tells a very different story.
