Overview: 840 cannabis tests by NAFS – South Africa

In this interview we get to review research into the South African cannabis testing landscape by Henrick Viviers at NAFS (National Analytical Forensic Services), 1 of 2 SAHPRA accredited reference laboratories for cannabinoid testing. We unpack two recent publications on cannabinoid research (listed below) one on 840 samples tested for potency the other on 310 samples reviewed for heavy metals. We also look at residual solvents present in extracts.

We distinguish between testing of edible, extract, flower, infused and other product formats. Based on tests it is clear that extracts are very popular formats in South Africa with legal flower also playing a big part. Potency testing is an important aspect of label claims for products and the test results are interesting.

Highlights from 840 samples tested is 72% of samples had more THC than CBD. 398 samples were extracts.

The interview also highlights the difference between qualitative and quantitative tests. The importance of using calibrated equipment with cannabis reference standards to validate a precise and accurate method with good linearity and range.

Related to limits for elemental impurities USP 232 it was seen that 44% of samples failed inhalation limits with 15% of oral samples exceeding limits for elemental impurities. The main metals of concern were Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Nickel (Ni), and Mercury (Hg).

We highlight the importance of sample preparation to ensure that uniform samples are provided that are representative of the entire batch. Moisture content is also an important factor when performing tests.
