Over the previous 50 years, the Indian population aged 50 and up (older adults) has tripled and is estimated to reach 404 million (40 crores) by 2036, accounting for 27% of the country’s projected population. As a result, the contribution of chronic illnesses to the total disease burden of older persons in India is expected to rise. Immunosenescence, a decline in the immune system with age that leads to increased vulnerability to infectious illnesses and other comorbidities, significantly increases the disease burden in this age group.
