Black Health & Wellness Event – February 19, 2022 – Bulletin Board

To foster good health and wellness, black people have embarked on self-determination, mutual aid and social support initiatives to build hospitals, medical and nursing schools and community clinics at a time when these doors were closed to African Americans in the United States due to the discrimination found at mainstream institutions. Such initiatives have led to the rise of more diverse practitioners, including women of all ethnicities and immigrant populations who benefitted from the push to diversify.

Today’s focus on preventive care and body positivity, physical exercise, and nutrition, includes dental and mental health for all members of the community. In the continuing shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, the community is using data to inform prevention and treatment, pointing out the documented disparities in these structures and developing a way forward toward better health for all.
