For over 20 years, families in the remote rural community of Alsabaat and neighboring villages in Kassala State, eastern Sudan, shared a water source with animals. “The water was polluted,” said Ibrahim, a community leader. “You might find a dead animal in the water stream.”
UNICEF rehabilitated the local water plant to give the community access to safe water for drinking, cooking and food preparation.
Women and girls no longer have to spend hours every day carrying water for household use. Children have more time for playing and learning now. “Our lives have been greatly improved,” said Shaimaa, 12. “Clean water means health and wellness to me.”
