Ancient Italian Skeletons Contain Traces of Cannabis

Scientists in Milan, Italy have discovered traces of cannabis in two skeletons from the 17th century.

According to the CBC, the bones, from a 50-year-old woman and a teenage boy, showed traces of both THC and CBD.

The researchers said the discovery suggests that at the time cannabis was used recreationally by Italian people of all ages and genders.

Researchers said at the time cannabis was likely consumed by infusing it into baked goods and other items.

The findings are significant since Pope Innocent VIII in the late 1400s banned the use of cannabis and deemed it an “unholy sacrament.”

Recreational adult-use cannabis is not currently legal in Italy, though the country does not strictly enforce small amounts for personal consumption.
