As states continue to legalize medical marijuana, there is still a lingering stigma regarding the many applications of the drug’s usage. In order to provide medication without the symptoms of getting high, Mark Mascal describes his lab’s pseudocannabinoids and their applications. Mark Mascal received his PhD degree in chemistry from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, and was a postdoctoral researcher with Nobel Laureate Jean-Marie Lehn at the University of Strasbourg, France. He was a Visiting Professor at UCLA from 2000-2003, after which he took up his current appointment at the University of California Davis, where he is Professor of Chemistry. In the 2012-2013 academic year, he was the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy Technology at Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg, Sweden. His research interests include applications of sustainable chemistry to the synthesis of biobased chemicals and materials, the design and synthesis of topologically and theoretically interesting molecules, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, and computational chemistry. He is currently spending a year in government, working in the US Department of State as a science fellow and policy advisor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
