US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is on a quick visit to India, spanning less than 24 hours, during which he will meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is Blinken’s first visit to India since he assumed charge under President Joe Biden and is the talks are expected to focus on issues ranging from Pakistan extending help to Taliban to China’s increasing might.
Speaking to a group of civil society leaders at a New Delhi hotel, Blinken said that the relationship between the United States and India was “one of the most important in the world”. “The Indian people and the American people believe in human dignity and equality of opportunity, the rule of law, fundamental freedoms including freedom of religion and belief . . . these are the fundamental tenets of democracies like ours,” he said. “And of course, both of our democracies are works in progress. As friends we talk about that.”
#BasavarajBommai, senior BJP leader, is set to be the new Karnataka Chief Minister after #BSYediyurappa resigned on Monday.
Bommai was selected by the BJP to take over the reins of Yediyurappa, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced after the legislature party meeting on Tuesday. The meeting was held at Hotel Capitol in Bengaluru in the presence of central observers and the state in-charge. Yediyurappa was also present at the meeting.
“The party has given Bommai this responsibility. Bomai is a very experienced and senior party member. I am confident he will carry forward the programmes of Narendra Modi in Karnataka,” Pradhan said.
Bommai is the son of SR Bommai, former Karnataka CM. He joined the BJP in 2008 and has no RSS connection.

The occasion was the swearing-in of HD Kumaraswamy as Karnataka chief minister attended by a galaxy of opposition leaders, from the Gandhis, to Mayawati, Sharad Pawar, Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav. “What happened to the so-called unity after the famous Sonia-Mayawati embrace and many projecting Mayawati as a challenger to the PM? It did not even last six months till the 2018 elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh when Mayawati contested against the Congress,” a senior BJP minister says.
