Federal government and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) officials gave an update on the catastrophic flooding situation and state of emergency in British Columbia on Thursday afternoon, during which some good news amid the devastating situation was announced.
Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction Bill Blair said that while a month’s worth of rainfall hit British Columbia within a 24-hour period, the good news is that significant rainfall has ended with no further major precipitation expected for the rest of this week.
Blair also elaborated on the federal supports being provided to B.C.
He said on Wednesday, the government approved a request for assistance from B.C. (including air support for evacuations and personnel to mitigate flooding effects). Plus, at the request of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Blair convened an incident response group, comprised of all implicated ministers.
The floods have caused major road closures, mudslides and displaced many from their homes.
The update also comes as the Disaster Financial Assistance program is now available for eligible British Columbians in the southwest, central and southeast areas of the province and Vancouver Island. The financial assistance is for those affected by the flooding and landslides from Nov. 14 to 16, 2021. The application can be accessed online on the government website.
