What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of the two main chemicals in cannabis.

Let’s talk about some of the ways CBD works in your brain:

First, it behaves a little like an SSRI . SSRI is short for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. That’s medications like Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil, and they’re used for relieving clinical depression or anxiety. CBD can give your antidepressants a hand by helping boost the signals through serotonin receptors in the brain.

The amygdala is the part of your brain responsible for memory, decision making, and emotional responses. CBD has been clinically shown to reduce activity in the amygdala.

Now let’s talk about the hippocampus. The Hippocampus is not a university for large water mammals; it’s part of the amygdala. Some major depression or anxiety disorders occur when an adult’s hippocampus doesn’t keep creating new neurons. CBD promotes neurogenesis in the hippocampus, so YAY!

Okay here’s what all that medical bla bla bla translates to:

CBD has been CLINICALLY proven to: Reduce anxiety, Reduce inflammation, Relieve pain, Relieve dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements), Relieve nausea and increases appetite

There is also clinical evidence that CBD inhibits growth of certain cancer cells. However we still need to do a LOT more research.

To sum up: CBD oil is safe for things like anxiety and had some great medicinal properties, but should not be used in lieu of doctor prescribed medication.
