The theme for Black History Month 2022, chosen each year by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), aims to focus on the importance of ‘Black Health and Wellness’. In this highlight from 2020 NEI Max, Dr. Napoleon Higgins Jr, takes a look at how history has impacted the mental and physical health of Black Americans. We also take this opportunity to raise awareness of mental health in the black community. Communities of color have historically faced unique difficulties in accessing mental and behavioral health care, which is further compounded by stigma.
