The White House on Tuesday announced that President Joe Biden has quote “every intention of using his clemency power” as related to low-level drug convictions.

The news was announced by Jen Psaki (SOCK-eee) during a press briefing by the White House.

The Department of Justice also reversed a previous policy that would have required those serving home confinement sentenced to return to prison, now allowing the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to analyze each case.

The Biden administration, before this announcement, had encouraged upwards of one thousand people who were placed on home confinement to fill out clemency forms.

While this move is seen as a step in the right direction, lawmakers, advocates, and the public have grown impatient with Biden, who campaigned on cannabis reform, promising that he would push for decriminalization, rescheduling, and ensuring that people aren’t locked up over cannabis.
