A historic 1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill was signed on Monday by President Biden that included provisions requiring retail cannabis to be made available for federal research purposes.

This marks a massive departure for research-grade cannabis, as the only institution federally allowed to provide cannabis since 1961 has been the University of Mississippi.

The reason cannabis related language was included in this infrastructure bill relates to the new mandate explicitly requiring that a report be made available within two years to the government detailing the effects of driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated by retail cannabis.

For the purposes of public health, the bill outlines a clearinghouse and distribution method for retail cannabis to states that may not have cannabis legalized in their jurisdiction yet.
