Halloween Safety Tips – Wellness 101 Jr

Hey kids…Mr. Wellness here…Halloween is right around the corner so I thought it would be a good idea to go over some Halloween Safety Tips!

STEP ONE: STAND OUT
Halloween costumes come in all shapes, colors and sizes. It’s fun to be a different character every year. But remember, you will most likely be trick or treating at night…so it’s a good idea to make sure you STAND OUT in the dark. Try fastening some reflective tape to the front and back of your costume and to your trick or treat bag…this will help drivers see you when you’re out there. It’s also a good idea to bring along a flashlight or some glow sticks to not only help you see at night but for others to see you!

STEP TWO: WALK DON’T RUN
The excitement of Halloween can be pretty overwhelming. It can be very easy to want to run from house to house to load up on all that candy! But this is a bad idea my friends. Halloween costumes can be bulky and usually come with all kinds of accessories, and you could easily injure yourself on these items if you trip and stumble. Put your electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street. Trust me gang…the candy will still be there even if you walk!

STEP THREE: MAKE EYE CONTACT
This tip goes way beyond Halloween. When crossing the street, never assume that drivers see you. You want to make eye contact with them to grab their attention. You can even try throwing them a little wave to make sure that they see you…before you cross the street!

STEP FOUR: STICK TOGETHER
If you are under the age of 12…make sure you grab an adult to join you while you trick or treat. If you are old enough to trick or treat without supervision, make sure you stick to familiar areas that are well lit and always trick or treat in a group to maximize your Halloween fun. In this day and age, there are plenty of ghouls and goblins out there that would love to scoop up an innocent trick or treater!

STEP FIVE: CHECK IT
Be sure an adult checks your candy haul for choking hazards and tosses away any candy that seems to have been tampered with. Lastly don’t forget to check yourself and limit the amount of treats you eat to avoid a stomachache!

Ok gang question time…how do you stay safe for Halloween?
A. Sprint from house to house
B. Wear dark clothing
C. Jump out in front of drivers to scare them
D. Stay well lit, walk, make eye contact, stay in a group, and check your candy
Did you answer D…wow your memory is scary good!

That’s it kids…just follow those steps and you can have a fun but SAFE Halloween. Happy Halloween kids!
