Marion McNabb, DrPH, MPH presents “Healthcare Provider Medical Cannabis Research Study” at CannMed 2022.
Increasingly in the United States, medical patients are opting to choose medical cannabis over often more lethal prescription medications, or other over-the-counter medication (CCOE, 2019, 2020, 2021). However, the gap between the patient-driven need for cannabis therapeutic support and present medical provider knowledge is large. Practicing healthcare professionals especially need a baseline understanding of medical cannabis, what the endocannabinoid system is, how it functions, drug-drug interactions, and the role cannabis plays within the human body and overall health and wellness.
The Healthcare Provider Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices Related to Medical Cannabis Research Study led by the Cannabis Center of Excellence, INC. (CCOE), Medicinal Genomics, and UMass Dartmouth launched on May 16, 2021, and lasts until August 1, 2022. The goal of the study is to collect information from a variety of health care providers, specialties, and roles in the system (medicine, nursing, dental, pain management, etc.) on their beliefs, knowledge, and practices related to medical cannabis. The study also asks about their experiences with medical cannabis in their practices, prior education around the topic, and interest in future clinical education related to medical cannabis. The study is approved for human subjects by the UMass Dartmouth Institutional Review Board (IRB). At CannMed 2022, Dr. McNabb will present findings from the research study to date, including key findings including knowledge gaps, needs, and preferred learning methodologies for future education around medical cannabis.
