Chad O’Melia and Bryn Spejcher are hanging out at O’Melia’s place when a roommate comes home and heads straight to the shower. He starts hearing noises downstairs and when it sounds like something breaks, he takes a look. The roommate sees furniture toppled, the couch flipped over, covered in blood, and O’Melia severely wounded. O’Melia begs for help and the roommate calls 911.
When police arrive they find Chad O’Melia dead from over 100 stab wounds, and Bryn Spejcher crying and screaming hysterically with a bloody knife still in her hands. Officers use a Taser and several baton blows before they finally disarm Spejcher, who claims she lost control of herself after smoking pot with O’Melia.
Spejcher is charged with murder, but she remains free on bail
over the next 5-years while her defense team delays trial with hearings and experts to provide studies. Prosecutors reduce the charge after their expert psychologist agreed that Spejcher was suffering from ‘cannabis-induced psychosis’ when she stabbed O’Melia to death.
A jury finds Bryn Spejcher guilty of involuntary manslaughter, a charge that usually carries several years of prison time, but Ventura County Superior Court Judge David Worley handed down a sentence of two years probation and 100 hours of community service.
