How is Delta 8 legal cannabis?

A new kind of THC — the chemical in cannabis that makes you feel high — has emerged across consumer markets over the last few years. Delta 8, a hemp-derived compound often engineered in labs, is now a popular choice for cannabis producers and distributors looking to get around laws in states that ban natural THC.

The full effects of Delta 8 are still unknown. A lack of clinical trials, testing, or regulation makes it difficult for scientists to gauge the drug’s effect on the body. Experts worry that the harmful residual chemical additives in Delta 8, if improperly produced, could end up in consumer’s hands.

KPBS, in collaboration with NOVA PBS, is investigating the science behind Delta 8—and the legal loopholes that allow it to be sold.
