Indian-Origin Homes in the US Targeted by Burglars for Gold

Indian American families in the Rancho Rinconada neighborhood of Cupertino, California, have been targeted by a series of burglaries. Many homes have been broken into, with thieves taking valuable items, especially gold jewelry, which is an important part of Indian culture. The burglars typically break into homes when the families are away, often smashing glass patio doors to get inside.

One of the victims, Heena Desai, shared that her family lost over $30,000 worth of jewelry during one of these burglaries. Even though they had security cameras and an alarm system, the thieves managed to avoid detection. In another case, two Indian American tech executives, Mudita Tiwari and Jayshri Yadwadkar, lost more than $35,000 in cash, jewelry, and designer handbags to burglars.
