President Biden’s re-election campaign was plunged into crisis after a faltering performance in the first TV debate with Donald Trump caused panic among Democrats about his chances of winning back the White House.

Biden, 81, showed his age from the start of the showdown in Atlanta, Georgia, as he delivered meandering and muddled answers in a hoarse voice, in contrast to Trump’s more assured and disciplined messages on immigration and the economy.
