Marijuana and the History of the OG Kush

Marijuana and the History of the OG Kush

Marijuana is high in THC Content
While this is typically associated with recreational use following and understanding the history of the famous OG Kush strain can provide great insight into the marijuana culture in general.
OG Kush has become a worldwide staple used to create numerous famous strains like GSC and Headband. There are many different phenotypes of OG Kush, including Tahoe OG, SFV OG, and Ghost OG.
The following “History of OG Kush” is based on an interview with Matt “Bubba” Berger who found a bag seed in Florida that would later become known as OG Kush

History of OG Kush
Origin is Orlando Florida and seed came from an unknown bag of weed from Miami in 1991
Weed was called Krippy which was really just a generic term for good weed
Start of the generation that started naming and breeding
Only one plant was kept and propagated from the limited amount of seeds that were present in the once of original weed.
It was just called “Kush” since the first batch was said to look like Kush Berries.
*There is no such thing as a Kush Berry, but they liked the name so it stuck and has become popular in the cannabis industry.
August 1996 made it to Los Angeles

Became OG Kush…
1998 started to actually be called OG Kush in an attempt to identify it as the original strain grown in LA.
In general it tends to be a viney morphology that can have hermaphroditic tendencies.
Originally, to prevent the strain from being lost, seeds were the main form of distribution.

Quality over Quantity
Kush was generally a poor yielder in quantity
Quality was above average but shops in Amsterdam (Netherlands) did not want to pay any more for it originally since it was know well known.
Hard to get the premium price even though the quality was higher in Amsterdam, however during 1997-1999 Los Angeles, CA was getting top dollar for the Kush due to the great demand and limited supply.
$500+ per once and it was sold before it was grown
The Kush is very much a West Cost Strain as Sour Diesel was dominate on the East Coast.

Limited Starting Material
The Kush strain can be traced back to an original (literal) few seeds that were found in an once of weed.
Very rare for this limited starting material to become such a successful strain, but it is possible.
There are some people who have feminized it and generated their own version of it, but original has been kept for the special/unique terpen profile.

Past to Present
Matt “Bubba” Berger has been growing the same plant propagated via clone for 18 years.
Overall the end product is unchanged, but the leaf morphology has gone from the traditional five finger leaves to more of a funky/random morphology.
Yield has dropped a little bit also over this time however the chemical profiles remain like the original.
