Maya O’Neal is a current 4th year medical student and a 2024 DO candidate. This year, she will be joining the 2.8% of physicians that are black females in the United States. She is originally from a rural Georgia, USA town. Although she had access to adequate healthcare, she realized the shortage of physicians and specifically pediatricians in her home state. This prompted her desire for a career in medicine.
Maya graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and minor in Public Health. She has done research in parasitic gastrointestinal illnesses in the USA as well as sexual health in Jamaica. She is currently studying Osteopathic Medicine at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Maya recently matched into pediatric residency and will be starting this coming July pursuing a career in children’s healthcare.
Maya is passionate about establishing wellness in the pediatric population. She also has interests in global health and advocating for children from around the world.
