Teen obesity is a major public health problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2021-2022, 19.1% of adolescents aged 12-19 years were obese. This means that they had a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile for their age and sex.

The prevalence of teen obesity varies by race and ethnicity. In 2021-2022, the prevalence of obesity was highest among Hispanic adolescents (24.9%), followed by Black adolescents (23.9%), and American Indian/Alaska Native adolescents (22.1%). White adolescents had the lowest prevalence of obesity at 16.2%.

Teen obesity is also associated with socioeconomic status. In 2021-2022, the prevalence of obesity was higher among adolescents from low-income households (23.7%) than among adolescents from high-income households (17.2%).

Causes of Teen Obesity in the USA

The causes of teen obesity are complex and involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and behavioural factors.

Genetic factors

Some people are more likely to become obese than others due to their genetic makeup. This is because some genes can make people more susceptible to weight gain and less responsive to exercise.

Environmental factors

The environment in which we live plays a major role in our risk of obesity. Some factors in the environment that can contribute to teen obesity include:

Access to healthy food: In many parts of the United States, it is difficult to find affordable and healthy food. This is especially true in low-income neighbourhoods.
Lack of physical activity: Many teenagers do not get enough physical activity. This is due to a number of factors, including increased screen time, lack of access to safe and fun places to play, and school schedules that do not allow for enough time for physical activity.
Marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages: Teenagers are constantly bombarded with marketing for unhealthy foods and beverages. This marketing can make it difficult for teenagers to make healthy choices.
Behavioural factors

Behavioural factors also play a role in teen obesity. Some of these factors include:

Unhealthy eating habits: Many teenagers eat unhealthy foods and beverages, such as sugary drinks, fast food, and processed snacks.
Sedentary lifestyle: Many teenagers spend too much time sitting and not enough time being active.
Diet and Trips and Tracks to Control Obesity

There are a number of things that teenagers can do to control obesity. These include:

Eating a healthy diet: Teenagers should eat a variety of healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. They should also avoid sugary drinks, fast food, and processed snacks.
Getting regular physical activity: Teenagers should aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. This activity can be any type of activity that gets the heart rate up and makes the body sweat.
Making healthy lifestyle choices: Teenagers should also make healthy lifestyle choices, such as getting enough sleep and managing stress.
Here are some specific tips for teenagers who are trying to control obesity:

Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. This will help you avoid making unhealthy choices when you are hungry.
Choose healthy foods and beverages. Avoid sugary drinks, fast food, and processed snacks. Instead, focus on eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Get regular physical activity. Aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. This activity can be any type of activity that gets the heart rate up and makes the body sweat.
Set realistic goals. Don’t try to change everything all at once. Start by making small changes, such as adding a fruit or vegetable to your lunch each day or going for a walk after dinner.
