P1 | Pediatric ER visits spike in Michigan as more kids accidentally ingest marijuana edibles



KALAMAZOO, Mich. — “Since recreational marijuana has been legalized back in 2018 in Michigan, we’ve seen a steep rise in the admissions of both our intensive care unit and in our general pediatric floor,” Megan Sikkema, a pediatric specialist for Bronson Children’s Hospital, said.

According to Sikkema, accidental ingestion of marijuana in children as young as toddlers is becoming more common. She says it’s the pretty colorings of edibles that resemble candy like features that draw a child’s attention.

However, the effects of a child consuming an edible can be dangerous.
