(DENVER) — Local hemp industry leaders today called on the state’s Members of Congress to support legislation to regulate CBD. To bolster their efforts, the US Hemp Roundtable also announced the launch of Regulate CBD Now, an online campaign to encourage citizens to contact their representatives about this important issue.
Congress currently is considering two bills to allow the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate CBD as a dietary supplement or as a food additive. This legislation is critical for the success of the industry.
“Colorado is a hemp state. We need Colorado’s elected officials to stand up and support legislation that gives consumers confidence in our products, protects small businesses and farmers, and allows this new industry to thrive,” said Steve Smith, co-founder of Pet Releaf, a family-owned company based in Littleton.
Colorado is home to many hemp and CBD companies. Unfortunately, regulatory uncertainty has started to dismantle this up-and coming market. While the FDA has recognized the significant public interest in CBD, the agency has not yet established a legal pathway for its sale.
In the House of Representatives, HR 841 would allow CBD to be regulated as a dietary supplement. To date, only one Colorado representative — Rep. Ed Perlmutter – has signed on as a co-sponsor. With so much at stake, Colorado farmers, retailers, manufacturers and consumers are calling on the rest of the delegation to support these commonsense legislative solutions.
USHRT LAUNCHES “REGULATE CBD NOW” CAMPAIGN
To encourage support from representatives in Colorado and across the country, the US Hemp Roundtable has launched “Regulate CBD Now,” an online campaign where citizens can urge their elected officials to support HR 841 and S 1698.
The campaign is endorsed by the leading dietary supplement and hemp industry organizations, including the Council for Responsible Nutrition, United Natural Products Alliance, American Herbal Products Association, and the National Grocers Association. “The only way we’re going to see a regulated CBD market is if people make their voices heard,” said Miller. “Taken together, these two bills are a huge step forward in creating more certainty for farmers, greater protections for consumers, and more economic opportunity for Colorado hemp companies.”
