Speakers: Emily Running, Sr Digital Designer, Aetna
“Financial health affects wellness” was the message that Emily Running, Senior UX Designer at Aetna, a CVS Health Company, delivered to HXD 2021 participants. Running went on to explain that financial stress can affect one’s health by causing worry, a lack of sleep, hypertension, and other health issues. The stress is magnified by additional financial worry linked to having to figure out how to pay for the medicine or medical treatment, and what health benefits to use to cover costs to treat such health issues. Many organizations offer FSA/HSA accounts, health insurance benefits, and other benefits, but most people don’t understand how they work or even how to use them. Thoughtful design, informed by users, can pave clear paths to that kind of understanding. Staying true to that principal, Running took that approach when she was asked to update the PayFlex website. PayFlex, a CVS company, offers a variety of financial solutions that help clients with health savings plans, commuter benefits, tuition assistance, and more. Running led HXD participants through her work to improve the PayFlex website enough to instill trust with users, so they engaged with PayFlex, increasing website usage by double digits.
