S Jaishankar started his address to the UNGA by remarking, “Namaste from Bharat”. Recently, India has taken the decision to use its other name Bharat more prominently on international forums. “The world is witnessing an exception period of turmoil…At this juncture, it was with a sense of exceptional responsibility India took up the presidency of G20,” said Jaishankar.

“India’s vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ sought to focus on key concerns of many, not just narrow interests of a few.” EAM Jaishankar once again batted for reforms at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), saying the UNSC should be made contemporary.

African Union’s inclusion in G20 should inspire the United Nations to also make the Security Council contemporary, added Jaishankar.

“By doing so, we gave voice to an entire continent which has long been its due. This significant step in reform should inspire the United Nations, a much older organisation, to also make the Security Council contemporary.”
