Summer Running Must Haves – Run Eat Repeat

As the scorching summer sun shines brightly, it’s the perfect time to lace up your running shoes and hit the pavement. However, running in hot weather can be challenging if you don’t have the right gear. In this blog post, we will explore the must-have items that every runner should consider investing in for a cool and comfortable summer workout. From lightweight apparel to hydration essentials, we’ve got you covered. Here are the main categories we’re talking about today…

Best Summer Running Gear

Sun Protection: Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is crucial during summer runs. Apply a sweat proof sunscreen with a high SPF rating on all exposed areas of your body, especially the face, neck, arms, and legs. Don’t overlook wearing a wide-brimmed hat or a cap to shield your face and eyes from direct sunlight. Sunglasses with UV protection are also essential to safeguard your eyes from harmful rays and reduce glare.

Breathable and Moisture-Wicking Clothing: When it comes to summer running, choosing the right clothing is paramount. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that promote airflow and allow sweat to evaporate quickly. Look for moisture-wicking materials like polyester or technical fabrics that pull moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout your run. Don’t forget to wear light-colored clothing that reflects the sun’s rays, helping to keep you cooler.

Hydration Gear: Staying hydrated is vital during summer runs to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses. Invest in a reliable hydration system, such as a handheld water bottle, hydration belt, or a hydration backpack. These will allow you to carry an adequate amount of water or sports drink to replenish fluids as you sweat. Look for insulated options to keep your beverages cool throughout your run. Additionally, consider using a sweat-proof sports drink that replenishes electrolytes lost through perspiration.

Other Running Accessories: To beat the heat during your summer runs, consider using  other runner must haves like chafe protection tools and cooling accessories. Cooling towels, which can be soaked in cold water or chilled before your workout, provide instant relief when wrapped around your neck or forehead. Additionally, you may want to explore cooling headbands or wristbands that use innovative cooling technology to regulate body temperature.

Summer Running Must Haves

Sweat Proof Car Seat Cover : If you drive to your favorite long run location or races you need something to protect your car seats from sweat when you’re finished. I used to use a towel to try and cover my seats, but it always falls (which is super frustrating to wrestle with). These sweat proof seat covers are super easy to slip on and off your car seat (so you don’t have to keep them on all the time) and they’re a great price. I bought two so I would have one for each of the front seats and use them for road trips too.

Hydration Belt  / or /  Hydration Handheld Water Bottle : Hydration is key to running your best in all weather conditions. And in hot or humid weather – this is going to impact you faster. An important part of your hydration strategy is how you’ll get water or electrolytes during your run. Use one of these tools and plan where you can refill during your run.

Sweat Proof Sunscreen  / or /  Sweat Proof Sunscreen Spray : Apply a sweat proof, long lashing sunscreen about 30 minutes before your run to avoid sweating it off right away. Run Tip: If you always get sunscreen in your eyes – put it on below your eyes and protect your forehead with a hat or visor.

SPF Lip Balm  : Don’t forget about protecting your lips from the sun. This is my favorite spf lip balm and I use it all the time (not just when running).

Anti-Chafe Balm : Chafing sucks! The best approach is to try and prevent it before it happens with quality, sweat-wicking clothes and covering areas prone to chafing with an anti-chafe product.

Electrolytes  :  Electrolytes are essential for runners because they play a crucial role in maintaining proper hydration and ensuring optimal bodily functions during physical activity. When you run or engage in any form of exercise, your body sweats to cool down and maintain a stable core temperature. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes along with water. If these electrolytes are not replenished, it can hurt your performance and potentially lead to an imbalance in your body.

Sunglasses with polarized lenses  :  Long summer days make for sunnier runs. Protect your eyes with comfortable, polarized sunglasses.

Sweat Wicking Running Shirt and Shorts : Running gear that’s not made of sweat wicking material or clothes that don’t fit your current body = make running uncomfortable, feel harder and can cause chafing faster than usual. If you’ve gained or lost weight recently, consider getting new running clothes. Also, if your running clothes are very worn – they may have lost their sweat-wicking capability and it’s time for new gear.

Insulated Cup  : This is a hack for after your run or workout. A quality insulated cup that can keep your drink cold for up to 24 hours is I love chocolate milk after a run and a quality insulated cup can really keep it cold in my car so it’s easy to refuel after a run.

Positive Attitude : This is on SALE right now for 100% off!! It doesn’t cost money, but it does require payment in the form of choosing to be grateful for what you can do and looking for the good in every run. Run by effort level (not pace) on hot, humid days. And celebrate every tiny victory.

Don’t let the summer heat deter you from your running routine. Equipping yourself with the right gear can make all the difference in ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable workout. From moisture-wicking clothing and sun protection to hydration gear and cooling accessories, these must-have items will help you beat the heat and stay on top of your game. Embrace the summer season and take your running to new heights with these essential items. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and happy running!

Remember to prioritize your safety and comfort when choosing running gear. Invest in high-quality products that suit your needs and preferences. By taking care of your body and being prepared, you can make the most out of your summer runs.
