The Latest Federal Cannabis Legalization Updates | Tom & Miggy on the Road

Cannabis News for October 15 2023 | Tom & Miggy on the Road

This week Tom & Miggy are on the road and cover new federal workplace guidelines for THC testing do not create any new laws. Rather, they clarify that medical marijuana use is not a protected activity under federal law, and that employers are still able to fire employees for testing positive for THC, even if they have a medical marijuana card.

This is because marijuana is still a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, meaning that it has a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. However, many states have legalized medical marijuana, and some states have also legalized recreational marijuana.

The new federal workplace guidelines are designed to create uniformity for employers across the country, regardless of the state laws in which they operate. However, it is important to note that some states have laws that protect medical marijuana patients from discrimination in the workplace. For example, in Utah, employers cannot discipline or discriminate against employees who are registered medical marijuana patients.

A new interactive federal map shows how states rely on marijuana tax revenue to fund public services. The map was created by the Marijuana Policy Project, a non-profit organization that advocates for the legalization and regulation of marijuana.

The map shows that in 2021, states generated over $3.7 billion in tax revenue from legal marijuana sales. This revenue was used to fund a variety of public services, including education, public health, and infrastructure.

The map also shows that the amount of marijuana tax revenue that states generate varies widely. For example, in Colorado, marijuana tax revenue accounted for 1.4% of the state’s general fund revenue in 2021. In contrast, in Illinois, marijuana tax revenue accounted for 0.3% of the state’s general fund revenue in 2021.
