For example: if you take the candle flame as your object of meditation here are the steps. You can take any object you like in performing trataka.
BASIC STEPS
1) YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SEE THE OBJECT OF FOCUS CLEARLY – NOT TOO FAR AND NOT TOO NEAR – ONE ARM DISTANCE IN FRONT OF YOU IS GOOD ENOUGH
2) OUTER AND INNER TRATAKA (ANTAR AND BAHIR)
3) TRY NOT TO BLINK YOUR EYELIDS OR MOVE YOUR EYEBALLS
4) DON’T STRAIN YOUR EYES
5) IF YOU MUST BLINK THEN BLINK. WITH PRACTICE YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO GAZE WITHOUT BLINKING FOR A LONG PERIOD
6) RELAX YOUR EYES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
7) INITIALLY FOCUS ON THE CANLE LIGHT FOR 2 -3 MINUTES THEN CLOSE THE EYES
8) AND VISUALIZE THE AFTER-IMAGE OF THE CANDLE FLAME IN FRONT OF YOUR CLOSED EYES
9) TRY TO STABILIZE THE IMAGE OF WHAT MOVES UPWARDS OR DOWNWARDS WHEN YOU DO INNER TRATAKA
10) STAY AS LONG AS THE AFTER IMAGE IS CLEAR
11) WHEN THE IMAGE IS CLEAR THEN OPEN EYES AND GAZE AT THE CANDLE LIGHT FOR ABOUT 2-3 MIN
12) REPEAT AS LONG AS YOU HAVE TIME AVAILABLE.
13) AT THE END OF THE PRACTICE CLOSE THE EYES AND WATCH THE DARK SPACE IN FRONT OF YOUR CLOSED EYES
14) THE AIM IS TO INCREASE THE INNER TRATAKA REDUCING THE PERIOD TO OUTER TRATAKA
15) YOU CAN PRACTISE ANY TIME, BUT THE BEST IS EARLY IN THE MORNING AND LATE AT NIGHT.
16) INITIALLY YOU CAN PRACTISE 3-5 MIN AND CAN DO AS LONG AS YOUR TIME PERMITS.
