A survey conducted on 605 cannabis users showed that 81.7% found it beneficial to combine marijuana use and exercise.
Those who used cannabis while working out tended to work out longer than those who didn’t. Users claimed that cannabis consumption before physical activity enhanced their workout experience, increased focus, and improved their mind/body connection for athletic performance.
However, some users reported negative experiences, including an elevated heart rate and intoxication.
Research has shown that THC in cannabis can impair movement, balance, and coordination, delay reaction times, and negatively affect decision-making. Lifting requires careful judgment, timing, and coordination while using heavy weights and quick reaction times.
Human studies on the effects of THC on muscle growth had mixed results, with some finding no impact and others finding a decrease in testosterone. Testosterone is essential for building muscles and strength, making it crucial for weightlifting. THC may also negatively affect growth hormone production, essential for weightlifters’ muscle growth.
CBD doesn’t have the same intoxicating effects as THC. A study that examined the impact of CBD supplementation found that while CBD seemed to decrease muscle damage, it was also linked to a decrease in strength within 24 hours of taking it.
