There was unrest at Buxton, East Coast Demerara, on Wednesday following efforts by officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) to apprehend a man with a large quantity of marijuana. According to information provided by CANU, the suspect was travelling in a white motor car PRR 6703. Officers were pursuing him based on intelligence received and they eventually apprehended him in the vicinity of Buxton. CANU said some warning shots were fired in the course of the operation to stop the man, fleeing in his vehicle. The vehicle ended up in a nearby trench and several bundles of cannabis, amounting to 51.2 pounds were found. Meanwhile, CANU Head James Singh told the News Room that no one was hurt during the operation and the suspect was taken into custody. Afterwards, a protest erupted at Buxton. A large number of persons gathered on the roadway and burnt debris and later, a truck; the driver of the truck was allegedly beaten. The public road also became impassable. Efforts were made to clear the road throughout the day but residents were keen on expressing their anger.
