Donald Trump is focusing heavily on a promise he’s made for years: mass deportation. He first pledged in 2016 to remove 11 million undocumented immigrants from the U.S. While he was president, he carried out many worksite raids, banned travelers from Muslim-majority countries, and separated migrant families, many of whom are still not reunited.

Despite these efforts, the Trump administration only removed fewer than 1 million people, which is less than what Barack Obama achieved in his first term. Now, if Trump gets a second term, he has promised to carry out “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.” His team, led by hardliners like Stephen Miller, is preparing to push their extreme policies through by finding legal workarounds.

Trump’s plan includes using an old 18th-century law, deploying the National Guard, and building large detention camps. They also plan to overhaul the federal bureaucracy by issuing executive orders and placing loyalists in key positions to enforce these policies. Tom Homan, a former acting director of ICE, has said, “No one’s off the table. If you’re in the country illegally, you are a target.”
