Alcoholic beverages are a leading cause of cancer and should be labeled with a warning about this risk, the US surgeon general said Friday.
Alcohol is a factor in about 100,000 newly diagnosed malignancies each year, as well as approximately 20,000 cancer-related fatalities, according to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in an advisory aimed to raise public awareness of the risk. In comparison, alcohol-related driving accidents kill approximately 13,500 Americans each year.
