Usha is a textile designer from NID and received the Ford Foundation International Fellowship in 2006 to pursue her master’s degree in International Development & Social Change from Clark University, USA. A social development professional, who utilised her mother’s unique crochet skills to empower women and girls in Bihar. Samoolam is about craft, livelihood and women empowerment. Samoolam’s crochet jewellery, home décor items, curtain ties, cushion covers, coasters, table linen, stationery, rakhis and many other products are sold through both online and offline stores. Gaatha, Okhai, Flourish and Amara Earth are among the online retailers which sell Samoolam products. The products are also available offline in stores of Fabindia, Goodearth, Artisans, Anantaya and PeopleTree in Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Goa. Through her sincerity, innovation and determination she has built a grassroots organisation that is financially self-sustainable.
