Washington Today (12-6-23): Senate GOP blocks Ukraine aid, saying more U.S. border security needed



President Joe Biden makes a last-minute appeal to Senate Republicans not to hold up a bill providing military aid to Ukraine because the bill does not have changes they want to U.S. immigration and border security laws, telling them, “This cannot wait” and “we can’t let Putin win.”

The Senate voted not to advance the bill 49-51, short of the 60 votes needed. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says his party is insisting on what he calls “meaningful changes to the border.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland announces the first use of a U.S. war crimes law, with charges brought against four Russian military personnel for torturing an American citizen in Ukraine after Russia invaded.
