The Endocannabinoid system contributes to the body’s central functions. The endocannabinoid system is a collection of receptors and enzymes that work as signalers between the body cells and processes endocannabinoids and their receptors are embedded throughout the body in cell membranes in the brain, organs, connective tissue glands, and immune cells. The endocannabinoid system is also situated at the intersection of the body’s various systems allowing communication between different cells
and the coordination of the body’s central functions. These include stimulating appetite decreasing pain and inflammation controlling thermoregulation balancing energy use and metabolism promoting sleep, health, and tempering responses to stress among others.
Currently, there are two types of cannabinoid receptors receiving the lion’s share of attention in research circles, CB1 and CB2. While found throughout the body, CB1 receptors are most closely associated with the brain and central nervous system, and therefore involve learning, memory, hunger, decision-making, emotions, sensory and motor responsiveness, and maintenance.
