Hello everyone! Welcome back to American Cannabis TV. This video is about ” Why Athletes Smoke Weed “.
You must have seen popular athletes smoking a blunt now or then, if not then you must have definitely heard some of the retired ones that they used the drug to help them during their tenures. Well, with weed gaining acceptance even athletes are starting to come out about their use of the drug.
While the sporting world fights against the use of performance-enhancing substances, one drug nearly always escapes detection: cannabis. However, Josiah Hesse claims that its use is widespread in professional athletics in his recent book “Runner’s High” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons). Kenyon Martin, a former player for the Denver Nuggets, claims that between 85% and 90% of NBA players partake in cannabis use. An ex-enforcer with the Philadelphia Flyers named Riley Cote says that at least half of all NHL players engage in similar behavior. Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett claims that approximately 90 percent of NFL players rely on cannabis, primarily to treat discomfort, rather than experimenting with opiates, which can have major side effects and lead to addiction.
So is marijuana all that helpful or is it just mind games? Well, let us look into some of the beneficial effects of this drug. One of the most promising areas of cannabis study is its potential to reduce inflammation in muscles and joints. CBD, a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid present in cannabis, has been shown in numerous studies to reduce inflammation. Scientists are currently investigating its utility in treating autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s, lupus, and psoriasis.
Adam Brous, the founder of Ganja Guru Yoga in Denver, Colorado, is a qualified yoga instructor who uses marijuana in his own practice and encourages it to his students. Athletes “I’ve worked with” agree with Brous that “cannabis is a helpful tool.” “Typically, people are suffering from muscular and connective tissue discomfort and inflammation or are making a comeback from an injury or surgery,” Brous suggests topical solutions for athletes who want to benefit from CBD’s anti-inflammatory qualities but don’t want to smoke it or get high. For fast, focused relief in certain areas, “topicals and tinctures are fantastic.” Jamie Feaster, a former Division I collegiate pole vaulter and current vice president of marketing at marijuana delivery firm Eaze, too turned to CBD for its anti-inflammatory benefits when he ruptured his Achilles tendon.
Another benefit of marijuana is that it eases soreness and pain. In one particular field of cannabis study, researchers have found promising outcomes. Studies have shown that marijuana can reduce pain from a variety of sources, including chronic pain and acute pain from muscular spasms, which is promising news for people trying to find alternatives to potentially harmful and addictive opiates.
Trainer Zach Scioli of DIAKADI Fitness in San Francisco is now an outspoken supporter of medical marijuana therapies for their ability to speed up muscle regeneration and reduce injury-related pain. “Social conventions affected my perspective about marijuana,” Scioli says, “but it doesn’t take much digging into studies to realize that cannabis’ components are anti-inflammatory, stress lowering, antioxidative, and pain moderating.” He was immobilized for weeks after a slipped disc in his lower back and required multiple medications to alleviate the discomfort. After being given powerful prescription medications, I learned about their potential for addiction and damage. To alleviate the discomfort and swelling, I decided to test cannabidiol (CBD) oil and premium THC extracts. It was the best decision I could have made at the time.
Although it’s common knowledge that THC can help individuals fall asleep, new research suggests it may also benefit those who suffer from sleep apnea and has shown that it can prevent nightmares, which is good news for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. Meanwhile, REM sleep disturbance (when people “act out” their dreams) and daytime weariness can be mitigated by CBD. Since rest is crucial to health generally, this could greatly improve your athletic prowess.
