Why was marijuana prohibited in India? It’s a question I’ve personally had to answer about a hundred times since it first hit the news that our government is planning to ban it. The most common response I get is, “It causes brain damage/lung cancer”. Oh, is that all? Usually, that’s when I point out that alcohol and cigarettes do much worse things to your body, and yet they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Marijuana, or Cannabis Sativa as it is more technically called, has been used for industrial purposes for thousands of years. Also, it cannot be denied that cannabis has a well-documented history of being used successfully in the treatment of various health problems (including leprosy). Why then is cannabis illegal in India today? This video attempts to give you a gist of the history of how cannabis came to be outlawed in India.
