WNBA star Brittney Griner has lost an appeal against her prison sentence, after a Russian court upheld the ruling on Tuesday.
The U.S. athlete was sentenced in early August to 9 years behind bars and fined roughly 16-thousand U.S. dollars.
This, after being convicted on drug possession and smuggling charges.
The 32-year-old was arrested in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport,… after police found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage.
Speaking during her hearing through video link, the two-time Olympic champion apologized for her “honest mistake”.
U.S. officials, meanwhile, have said the Biden administration is in “constant contact” with Russian authorities,… working to secure the release of detained Americans in Russia.
